Private Client Tax Assistant Manager

Their Birmingham office provides private and business tax services, along with investment management, financial planning, private banking and dedicated charity expertise. The tax investigations team also assists clients in dealing with HM Revenue & Customs' (HMRC) enquiries.
The Private Client Tax Services team seeks an Assistant Manager to manage the compliance and tax advice process for a client allocation. Key responsibilities of the position are:
Client Work:
•Prepare more complex Grade A tax returns
•Review basic Grade B/C tax returns
•Manage HMRC enquiries
•Responsibility for compliance work on clients
•Prepare complex tax computations
•Supervise preparation of simple tax computations
•Monitor time limits and elections for compliance portfolio
•Draft or review HMRC correspondence
•Prepare technical research
•Prepare reports for clients in relation ad hoc advisory matters
•Contribute at client meetings
•Responsible for billing and monitoring budgets
Staff Management
•Delegate tasks and review work from Trainees/Seniors
•Coach Trainees
•Provide feedback for Trainees appraisals
Training & Development:
•Prepare technical training sessions
•Maintain technical knowledge
•Attend internal training sessions
Compliance
•Ensure relevant client deadlines are met
•Ensure Smith & Williamson procedures are adhered to
•Responsible for some departmental administrative tasks
Business Development
•Assist the partners with fee quotes and growing the business
•With a formalised departmental and firm-wide program, develop contacts with firm and externally
•Join the mentor scheme to help the development of their career
The key necessary skills are:
•Knowledge of private client and partnership tax and some planning experience
•Some tax advisory experience preferable but not essential
•Exemplary organisational and communication skills
•Keen to learn more
•Strong IT skills including practical knowledge of Microsoft Office packages; Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
•Starting to gain staff management/mentoring/supervisory experience
•Evidence of managing a small client portfolio desirable
